Francisco de Almeida

Designer, architecte
(1954) - Pindamonhangaba - São Paulo- Brésil

Francisco de Almeida, architect (graduated from the schools of architecture of Paris and New York - University of Columbia), distinguishes particularly in the fields of interior architecture, lighting projects, design of furniture and lamps and objects staging.

Installed in his workshop of São Paulo since 1989 (AZP Design), Francisco de Almeida is surrounded by a dozen of professionals: architects, designers, craftsmen and technicians. All the projects carried out are at the same time singular and simple. He portrays himself as: "a man of creation and realization. I work in the field of ideas and I like to be able to carry them out. I am an architect."

The AZP Design workshop is a laboratory where the ideas of Francisco de Almeida are realised under the control of the craftsmen. The simplicity of the thoughts of the designer is naturally translated into the design and the manufacturing of his lamps: noble raw materials, semi-industrialized materials and other elements (recycled glasses, textiles, papers...) are ingeniously combined with the light to give rise to simple and refined creations. In this process, craftsmen and designers interfere their complementary competences to research alternative techniques in order to concretize the ideas of Francisco de Almeida. These techniques go from the assembly of rice paper sheet to the laser cutting. The strong implication of the craftsman as an actor full-fledged in this process is what he calls the “induscraft”.
